Week 12

Pixote (1981)

This ultra-realistic portrayal of the terrible hardships of Sao Paulo streetlife (made 2 decades before the far more stylised international hit City of God) is made all the more chilling by the fact its child-star in the title role, was killed in a gang-related shoot-out only a few years after the making of the film. A seminal work of Brazilian cinema.

To be screened Friday 23:59...

Amores Perros (2000)

Alejandro González Iñárritu's debut feature catapulted him into international limelight, became one of the most successful Latin-American films of all time and ushered in a new generation of talented Mexican directors. Its complex plot, emotional storylines and handheld camera work make it a viewing experience that's hard to forget.

To be screened Saturday evening...

  1. Pixote:
A story of childhood deprived and distorted that resonates the world over, Pixote is not only never allowed to be a child, he is a 10 year old who longs to be a criminal and do what criminals do, but why did he become that way?

    Amores Perros:
Intense, visceral and powerful, and still Inarritu's best film.

The film I found hard to watch. It was worth the trouble though.

    Amores Perros:
Beautiful, captivating film. Been under impression of it for days.
