  1. Walkabout:
The terrifying beauty of the vast Australian outback, and the early (unexplained) scene where the father loses it and starts shooting at his own kids, these are snippets of this film which I'll never forget.

    Mishima:
I remember the mess-up with the file of Rome Open City, and good ol' Don Ruggs coming to the rescue with this very unique film about the life and art (very much intertwined) of the complex, perplexing Yukio Mishima, what I remember most from it now is the final seppuku scene, the abstract reworkings of some of Mishima's literature and especially the set design in those scenes and Ken Ogata, a very gifted actor in perhaps his best known role in the West now but who was even better in Vengeance is Mine.

  2. Only small thing to add was how much the film was enhanced by the soundtrack by Philip Glass, the drum and militaristic rhythm impresses on the audience the discipline inside Mishima's mind that takes him to his final action. And as a biopic what is impressive is not just how accurately and fully it told Mishima's life, but how it kept it exciting and went deeper into his psyche with those gorgeous reworkings of his novels. Hopefully Mishima Night will be a good follow-up!
