  1. Uncle Boonmee...
Although beautifully shot; long thoughtful takes; some stunning scenary (such as the waterfall and the underground cave), I had little idea what was going on from beginning to end.
My confusion was not helped by the dialog, which, for such a subject of such depth, was bordering on dull at times. Although I'm sure my own shortage of understanding of the Thai culture and maybe lack of imagination didn't help, just a little more content in the film to assist understanding wouldn't have been detrimental to its atmosphere, I feel.

  2. Secrets and Lies.

A tale of people, of family; the complexities and dramas of life. Mike Leigh shines the spotlight on a dysfunctional family, rife with ‘secrets and lies’. Hiding their traumas, rather than sharing the pain with each other, supporting each other. He shows how life’s traumas are often treated as shameful things; something dirty to be hidden away – but he also shows that the truth will out, and with the truth comes relief . Truth enables healing to begin...

There are many standout performances in this emotional powerhouse of a film. Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Claire Rushbrook and Phyllis Logan, all create characters with such depth that we completely feel them; empathise with them; feel frustration at them!

    10/10. :)

  3. Sounds like a hundred million familes the world over, what made them so special?

  4. Why should films be only about fantasy or extraordinary events? You can immerse yourself, and get emotionally involved with a character driven tale about real life. You can learn too. There are life lessons to be taken from this screenplay.

When did I say they have to be?

The plot of the film looked uninteresting and not something I have not seen before in other films and soap operas. Family secrets, illegitimate children, shame, incest/rape. What is new about that, nothing.

  6. I understand that you have no interest, but you haven't seen the film. How would you know if it has something fresh to offer?
