I Was Born was the first silent film that I felt didn't need the few bursts of written dialog it had; so expressive were the actors (especially the main characters, two small boys). Completely and utterly charming, despite a message of sadness in cynicism and a certain loss of boyish innocence, I found that I had a daft grin on my face throughout the film. Just wonderful :)
Tokyo Sonata. Such a powerful film. A family, full of tension, struggling to communicate with each other. As circumstances threaten to tear everything apart, we watch the family break down but with a possible glimmer of hope? Told with so much humility and empathy, it has the power to shock, reduce you to tears, and lift you, reinforcing your belief in the human spirit.
