Earth (1930)

  1. Пред дождот

Beautifully structured film which, through a few individual stories, shows the whole tragedy of ethnic and religious hatred in the Balkans with its consequences.
In the end, it's themselves they are killing...

  2. Before the Rain - Beautiful scenery and music which could be a bit haunting at times! The scenes between monk and the young girl were really tender which I liked :) I also liked how it didn't go in the 'correct' order of time in which the scenes occurred - perhaps to signify that such things, for example war, won't ever stop which is really saddening but that's how the world is.

Cruel and beautiful. Amazing film with amazing soundtrack.

  4. Two films that once again show the power of cinema to transform images beyond their literal meanings into something more.

In Before the Rain the landscapes of Macedonia are transformed into a timeless place that reminds one of the biblical roots of these senseless inter-religion inter-ethnic violences, it could be 1994 but the look and atmosphere just as easily feels like its 2000 years earlier than that... of course Macedonia was not quite like this in reality.

In Earth simple shots of rural Ukraine become a poetic surrealistic tribut to cosmic pantheism and nature's eternal cycle of life and death.

  6. I understand completely why Nameless said this film's story was secondary! It really is. As well as the dialogue actually, which sometimes didn't make much sense at all. The main beauty of this film is the visuals - the portrayal of life and death, the circle of life. There were many scenes which I liked, the opening scene for one is just wonderful, with the wheat moving in the wind in a motion which reminds me of classical music being conducted and also ocean waves. The best scene(s) though have to be the ones at the end of the film! When Basil is being carried in his coffin and the apples on the trees hit his face (he also goes past some growing sunflowers) I think it's a beautiful and poetic way to signify and remind us that as one life ends, others are beginning all around us. Important to note that the film begins with the death of a man and ends with beautiful nature and rain giving life to plants/fruit (as well as a pregnant lady feeling contractions) - a circle of life :) And life is beautiful.
