Howards End (1992)

Remains of the Day (1993)

  1. Howards End - I really enjoyed it. I loved watching the differences in the classes and the communication between them. Emma Thompson was wonderful of course but I also loved the performances by Helena and Vanessa. The scenery was great, especially those of the bluebells and the purple flowers in the forest, I would love to have somewhere like that nearby where I can just lie in and relax. I think though that the ending could have been done better, it seemed a little abrupt to me (especially due to the lead up in the letter from Ruth to Margaret) They were very close friends so I just guessed that conversation between Margaret and Henry would be longer and more intense maybe I dunno. But overall a really wonderful film and I'm looking forward to Remains of the Day even more now and other Ivory films.

  2. Margaret finding out that she was already given Howards End is not meant to be a big dramatic drawn-out moment, so I think that is why. The ending is more about the young son of Leonard and Helen, the future, the one who shall inherit Howards End, and that is a metaphor for Forster's wish of an England where all social classes can co-exist freely and happily.
