Week 140 (The Bridges of Madison County)

The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

  1. This is probably the most conventional love story of the week as it’s actually based on a bestselling romance novel. So the plot is a bit contrived (and this idea a mother would write a sometimes erotically charged letter to her children), the plot doesn’t really move forward in the second half until it then quickly ties everything up, and there are occasional glimpses of the corny writing in the voiceover.

But, thankfully the voiceover is used sparingly and if you put all those issues aside, there is an enjoyable film. What makes the film so watchable for me is the performance from Meryl Streep. She’s constantly working, a roll of the eye, the sighs, the bite of a lip, the quick turn of the head, a thousand little gestures. She really becomes this woman; she betrays her every thought, her disappointments, her doubts, her aspirations.
