Week 144 (L'Atalante)

L'Atalante (1934)

  1. A film full of beautiful images and very moving. Love for all its madness and jealousies, is also an elastic band that pulls them back together.

There's the surreal charm. The way cats tumbles out wardrobes, cling onto peoples backs and fly through the air. How lovers imagine seeing each others faces in the water. The way a puppet can orchestrate music. The friend's hands in the jar kept to remember him. The totally unexpected tattoos on Pere Jules' body. The way the film suddenly breaks into song. The mechanical puppets in the Parisian shop windows.

Praise also for the acting. The couple, the way they embrace, the way they play, the way they argue, feels so real. And Michel Simon's gruff charisma really stole every scene he was in.
