Week 158 (WW1 Fortnight)

Paths of Glory (1957)

  1. Firstly it's remarkable this is from 1957 because everything feels so fresh. This brutally pins down the hypocrisy of the elites far away from the front, whether it is the aristocratic officer class protected in the palaces, or the political class today, they make decisions about men to perform actions they would never make. Then Kubrick throws in that ending that just captures how exploitative war is, soldiers reduced to animals, showing the utmost disrespect to a woman who is clearly afraid, but then they cry copious tears upon hearing her voice revealing their anguish and humanity. Only for them to return to the front.
