EFAS went for a different type of a film for week 5. Animations are sometimes underrated by the public but there have been some very good ones over the years. One of the most famous guys involved in animation film industry is Miyazaki who is known for his stylish films. Castle In the Sky and Spirited Away are two of his well known works. One about a boy and a girl in pursue of a legendary castle and the other one about a young girl who finds herself in the middle of a parallel world of ghosts and spirits and ruled by an evil old woman during a trip with her parents.
Spirited Away (2001)
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Country: Japan / Language: Japanese or Dubbed English / Running time: 126 minutes
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Director: Craig Gillespie
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner, Patricia Clarkson
Country: USA / Language: English / Running time: 106 minutes
This nice and emotional yet intelligent film is about a socially inept and introvert character depicted by Ryan Gosling who lives in a garage with his brother and sister in-law in a small town. After having problems to communicate with people around him, he falls in a love with a toy who he names Bianca. Whilst at first his family and friends try to help him, they realise later that Bianca has also become a part of their lives. The film explores how they decide to help Lars through that period until he gets himself back on the track again.

Beautiful; gentle; emotive and uplifting. A story of trauma, healing, kindness and humanity at its finest. 10 stars!

ReplyDeleteI think, for me, Lars and the Real Girl demonstrates that mental illness can be a coping mechanism for trauma experienced, and shows events that can trigger these episodes (in this case his sister-in-law's pregnancy, having the effect of making him revisit his very birth and it's tragic consequences). To see how, in reaction to his struggles, he was treated with love, kindness and humility, and the effects of that.. well, it was incredible touching.
ReplyDeleteSpirited Away:
ReplyDeleteA masterpiece of the imagination, Shihiro's trip is a thrilling pleasure to watch, Miyazaki is a genius.
Lars and the real girl:
This is the kind of film the US should make more of, quirky and whimsical in a touching way, and displaying warmth and generosity to the humanity of its characters.
