Perhaps some of us weren't so well equipped to get all the references to Communist era Yugoslavia's politics in this film, but the main character's paranoid outbursts were a universal enough display of absurdist comedy for us all to get it.

What impressed me most about seeing this masterpiece again was its use of sound, especially since it was so soon after the SOF episode which reminded me that the few years after the coming of sound in 1928 really saw film become less innovative, but in this Lang actually found some groundbreakingly new ways to use sound and make a real sonar soundscape, with aural rhymes, different sounds announcing different characters, the occasional silence because that is a vital part of using sound too, and the eery whistling which eventually gives Peter Lorre away.
