1. MEMORIES OF MURDER: The link between the films is a clear one in terms of themes of unknowability and the toll a long strenuous investigation takes on frustrated crime-investigators, as well as both films being based on notorious real-life serial killers who both shocked the respective counties and caused a media furore. Also both films rely very heavily on accurately recreating a time/place with careful attention to detail: SF in the 60s/70s in Zodiac, South Korea in the 80s in MOM
2. DIRTY HARRY: Again this one is clear, and in fact this film is even referenced clearly in Zodiac in the scene at the cinema, where it shows that the Zodiac is already becoming part of pop culture. Dirty Harry's "Scorpio Killer" is very obviously based on the Zodiac killer who at that time was still fresh in memories.... Scorpio terrorises San Francisco and sends coded taunting letters to newspapers/police.
3. ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN: In its meticulous, procedural quality, Zodiac is a thriller about the slow strenuous steps made towards unravelling truth which very much recalls the pacing and structure of Pakula's 70s classic political-thriller.
